Courses
Current courses taught by ENHANCE faculty:
– BME Practical Machine Learning, Instructor Dr. Azarang (Fall 2024)
– BME 590.5 Ultrasound Imaging and Therapy, Instructor Dr. Papadopoulou (Spring 2025)
Practical Machine Learning (BMME 575)
This undergraduate- and graduate-level course offers practical machine learning concepts and tools. First, some main mathematical aspects will be covered briefly, including linear algebra, calculus, probability, and random process along with an introduction to a number of Python packages related to the course project in Jupyter Notebook. Later in this course, students will get familiarized with a variety of topics in the design, training, implementation, and interpretation of deep learning models with several practical examples. They will also be able to identify and use machine learning terms and concepts in practice: supervised, semi-supervised and unsupervised learning strategies, underfitting and overfitting, mini-batch learning, testing and validating, classification and regression.
Instructor: Dr. Arian Azarang
Ultrasound Imaging and Therapy (BME 590.5)
This course introduces the fundamental principles of ultrasound imaging and therapy. The course is structured into three main areas: ultrasound imaging, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), and therapeutic ultrasound. Students will explore both theoretical and practical aspects of ultrasound, covering topics such as acoustic wave propagation, transducer technology, CEUS techniques in perfusion quantification and microvascular imaging. Additionally, ultrasound bioeffects and their therapeutic applications will be discussed. The course will be complemented by selected guest lectures, hands-on tutorials/guided simulations and experiments, and clinical practice simulation scenarios. Students will engage in individual and team-based projects and research paper presentations throughout the course.
Instructor: Dr. Virginie Papadopoulou
